Centre Stage will showcase two workshop performances of a new musical, ‘La Zafra,’ in partnership with the Hispanic Alliance as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The performances, planned for Oct. 9-10, feature a professional cast in a semi-staged production. The musical is written by playwright Mario Suarez, with compositions, arrangements and orchestrations by Iliana Rose, a Greenville-based composer of Cuban-American descent.
The story is rooted in the experiences of Mexican immigrants in the South and inspired by true events. According to a release from Centre Stage, the musical “asks audiences to consider both the promise of the American dream and the personal cost of pursuing it.”
The workshop performances allow the audience to experience an evolving score and see the story and performances take shape, providing an inside look at the development of a new production. English and Spanish captioning will be available.
Following the Oct. 10 performance, Suarez and other guests will participate in a conversation about the story and creative process.
