The Greenville City Fire Department officially opened its $10.4 million fire station near downtown Greenville on Sept. 29.
City leaders, former fire chiefs, active and retired firefighters and community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the new Fire Station No. 4 at 423 E. Park Ave. The facility replaces the 76-year-old fire station at the corner of East Stone and East Park avenues.
The new 12,700-square-foot fire station features two fire truck bays, plus support rooms for equipment, decontamination and medical supplies. Thirty firefighters work at Fire Station No. 4, utilizing the facility’s bunk rooms, living spaces, fitness room and wellness amenities.
“What we built here is more than a fire station,” said Greenville City Fire Chief Brian Horton. “For the firefighters and officers who will serve here, it’s their second home – a place where they will train, prepare (and) share meals, rest between calls and respond at a moment’s notice when our community needs them.”
Greenville City Manager Shannon Lavrin said the former Stone Avenue fire station, originally built in 1950, had reached the end of its useful life and faced many challenges. For example, the facility sits within a floodplain and was damaged during Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
The new Fire Station No. 4 was built on a 1.6-acre, city-owned property up the road from Stone Avenue. The fire station responds to calls for service across more than five square miles in downtown Greenville, the North Main areas and up to North Pleasantburg Drive.
“Station 4 serves nearly 8,000 addresses across this part of Greenville. Those are homes, workplaces and places where people gather,” said Greenville City Councilmember Ken Gibson. “By keeping this station in their neighborhood, we have kept our crews close the community that depends on them.”
Construction of the Fire Station No. 4 kicked off in the summer of 2025 and took 14 months to complete. The facility marks the fourth fire station the city has built over the past two decades. Greenville Mayor Knox White said the project represents the city’s commitment to upgrading essential service facilities to support public safety in Greenville.
The new fire station cost $8.8 million to construct and $1.6 million to plan and design. Greenville City Council approved the issuance of a general obligation bond not to exceed $10 million in April 2025 to help cover the project’s costs. Fire Station No. 4 was designed by ADW Architects and constructed by Hogan Construction Group.
