Greenville County Schools Superintendent Burke Royster’s contract has been extended through June 30, 2029.
The school district’s board of trustees approved the contract extension after conducting Royster’s annual performance review Nov. 10. He earned an exemplary evaluation rating from the trustees for his leadership and was assessed in six categories:
- Instructional leadership
- Quality personnel
- Culture of achievement
- Organizational, operational and resource management
- Communications and community relationships
- Tone from the top
Carolyn Styles, the board’s chair, said the evaluation reflects the school system’s growth and achievement under Royster’s leadership. She referenced GCS achieving its highest graduation rate of 90.6% in 2025, recently revealed in the South Carolina Department of Education Report Cards.
“Additionally, our most recent graduating class achieved the highest percentage of college or career readiness, and 97.7% of schools rated excellent, good or average on the State Report Cards,” Styles said. “This level of progress and attainment is not by accident and shows what intentional leadership paired with the hard work of students, educators, staff and families can collectively accomplish.”
Royster has been superintendent of Greenville County Schools since 2012.
