In what’s become a tradition as reliable as tomato season itself, this summer’s Tomato Sandwich Taste Off is returning for its eighth year in Travelers Rest.
The annual fundraiser and “legendary culinary event” — to quote the team organizing the event — will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 29 at Trailblazer Park.
“Legendary” might seem an overstatement for an event focused solely on tomatoes, but this year’s competition — an eclectic medley of chefs and bakers — would seem to back it up.
As in years past, the contest pits creative culinary minds against one another in a quest to create the ultimate tomato sandwich. The ingredients are already there: fresh local tomatoes, sliced thin or thick, mashed or crushed, or anything in between. The rest is limited only by what can be imagined, although bread is usually well-advised, considering it is a sandwich contest, after all.
This year’s competitors include:
- Rise Bakery (returning champion)
- Fireforge Crafted Beer
- Camilla Kitchen
- Urban Wren
- Humble Roots
- And more still-unnamed participants
Proceeds from the event go to support the Travelers Rest Farmers Market.
