The state Department of Transportation has closed a portion of Crowe Creek Road in Pickens County after a partial bridge collapse.
The bridge crosses a portion of Lake Keowee near Newton Road, and SCDOT crews are assessing the damage and trying to determine what caused a section of the roadway to collapse.

Built in 1968, the bridge was scheduled for replacement due to its age and design. According to the department, the latest inspection rated the bridge in fair condition; however, the span was load restricted prohibiting heavy trucks and other vehicles from using it.
SCDOT engineers are working to develop an expedited plan to replace the bridge, but the closure is expected to last for months.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes. The department will release more information as details become available.
