The Greenville County Museum of Art is showcasing more than 35 pieces produced by Black artists in “Say It Loud”.
The exhibition is on display at 420 College St. in Greenville through March 2 and features pieces from the museum’s permanent collection in mediums such as painting, collage, mixed media, photography and sculpture from various artists. The works also include artists with a South Carolina connection, such as painters Edwin Harleston and Jonathan Green, photographer Elise Harleston, and batik artist Leo Twiggs.
“Billie’s Blues” by Frederick Brown Photo provided by GCMA“One of the things that is a good thing to walk away with when you have been through and looked at the variety of work, is that although they all fit in that category of African American art, there are so many different ways that the stories are told through the art that is in this exhibition,” said Ellen Westkaemper, head of education with the GCMA. “Some of the paintings are about Black history and figures like Billie Holiday or Harriet Tubman. Then others are painters who were just painting abstract expressionism or murals or making sculptures.”
