After serving a 15-year tenure with the city of Mauldin, Mitchell B. Turner will retire as chief of police April 2, 2021.
“I am thankful for the numerous opportunities the city of Mauldin has given me and for the level of support our department has received from our community,” he said. “I’m looking forward to focusing on my well-being, spending more time with my family and exploring new opportunities in life.”
Turner joined the Mauldin Police Department in 2006 and served as interim city administrator in 2018.

After his arrival, Turner sought accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation. The police department was awarded the CALEA accreditation in March 2012 and the SCLEA accreditation in December 2013.
Turner also started the Mauldin Police Youth Academy, and over the past 14 years, boys and girls between the ages of 11 to 14 have participated.
“Chief Turner’s commitment to the city of Mauldin and the Mauldin Police Department has been admirable,” said Mauldin Mayor Terry Merritt. “He has worked hard to make sure Mauldin continues to be a great place to live and has been a steady force in keeping our city safe.”
Turner was also awarded the Bridge Builder award from the Palmetto State Law Enforcement Officer Association in 2010 for his efforts in recruiting and hiring minorities to serve within the Mauldin Police Department.
In addition, Turner is a graduate of Coker University, the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the FBI Command College, the Local Government Leadership Institute and the Risk Management Institute sponsored by the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
Prior to coming to Mauldin, Turner served with the Hartsville, South Carolina, Police Department from 1995 to 2006.
Following Turner’s retirement, Lt. George Miller will serve as interim police chief while Mauldin city administrator Brandon Madden conducts a search for the new police chief.
