Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) has completed the first phase of its $92 million Swamp Rabbit gravity sewer upgrade project aimed at expanding wastewater capacity between Greenville and Travelers Rest.
Begun in late 2025, Phase 1A replaced 2,800 linear feet of sewer main between East Bramlett and Sulphur Springs roads. The work involved installing a single pipe, ranging from 48- and 60-inch-diameter sections, to replace two aging 20- and 36-inch parallel pipes.
ReWa CEO Rebecca West addressed community leaders and stakeholders during a ceremony celebrating the completion of the first phase of the project.
With a section of 60-inch pipe as backdrop, West said the new line is expected to have a 100-year service life and be capable of meeting the anticipated demand growth for wastewater capacity in the region between Greenville and Travelers Rest.
The project roughly parallels the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail and will eventually extend to Travelers Rest when complete in 2031.
“It is really hard to imagine needing a pipe this large, but we’re already thinking about what comes next,” West said.
ReWa’s sewer system upgrades are being undertaken in tandem with MetroConnects’ wastewater infrastructure upgrades in the Union Bleachery community as part of its larger Clean Water Forward initiative.
West said the project, along with other investments and upgrades to ReWa’s system, are important investments in critical infrastructure that most people will probably never see but rely on every day.
