Prisma Health announced it has invested $41 million to add new smart beds across the health care system.
Approximately 1,500 inpatient beds will be replaced by Hillrom smart beds and surfaces to improve the patient experience. Prisma’s staff will also be able to use the smart beds to provide enhanced care for patients in the intensive care unit, labor and delivery, medical and surgical units, and bariatrics.
The beds will include Hercules patient repositioning technology which allows one caregiver to safely reposition a patient. The bed’s advanced technology will also help with fall prevention, pressure injury reduction, increased comfort and improved communication.
Other innovative features of the smart bed include:
- Floor projections indicating the status of the bed alarm, position and side rails
- Powered transport with stop-and-turn controls
- A fifth wheel to aid portability
- A built-in USB port for patient’s devices and a storage area
- Illuminated side rails and under-bed lights
Mark O’Halla, president and CEO of Prisma Health, said the investment underscores the commitment to placing patient safety and satisfaction at the center of everything they do.
“Incorporating the cutting-edge technology of these beds will streamline clinical workflows and reduce manual tasks, significantly reducing the risk of injury to both caregivers and patients and enabling our team members to provide more efficient, accurate and compassionate care to improve patient outcomes,” O’Halla said.
Prisma is currently working to roll out the new smart beds. This project is expected to be completed by mid-September.
