The Roper Mountain star, shining over Greenville over three decades, was removed for repairs and technological upgrades Nov. 20.
The star was installed in 1995 as a birthday gift to Buck Mickel from his family.
Roper Mountain Science Center is launching a fundraising campaign, Relight the Star, to raise the $130,000 needed to fully restore the star’s structure, wiring and lighting system.
“The Roper Mountain star means so much to our community – it’s a symbol of light, hope and the spirit of Greenville,” said Michael Weeks, director of Roper Mountain Science Center, in a news release. “These updates will honor its history while preparing it for the next 30 years of memories.”
The star’s return is tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving 2026.
