GJ: How were you contacted to create this piece?
RC: This sculpture was the first large-scale metal artwork completed at my studio at The Artistry Gallery circa 2010. At the time, I had access to a forklift and a bridge crane, which made the heavy lifting possible. The material was salvaged from a local metal recycling yard. This sculpture has been painted several different colors over the years and was installed at its current location with the help of art patron Michael Watts.
GJ: What is the inspiration for this piece?
RC: The inspiration behind this artwork was to build something heavy that could not be [easily] stolen. The pipe elbows symbolize directions [such as] coming and going [and] the ins and outs of The Village [of West Greenville].
GJ: What materials did you use?
RC: Recycled steel pipe and plate.
GJ: How long did it take to create? What was the creation process like?
RC: This piece took several weeks to complete. I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do and the materials on-hand, so it was straightforward.
GJ: What is your favorite part of the piece and why?
RC: I like the height and playfulness of the sculpture. [It is] great for sitting on top of and great photo ops.
GJ: When was it completed?
RC: December 2009.
It is located at 1279 Pendleton Street in Greenville.
