A local high school student has been selected for an elite U.S. Navy Summer Flight Academy aviation program.
Wren High School senior Alfred Armstrong will join 27 other high school juniors and seniors from across the U.S.
During the eight-week program, which will run from June 5 through July 29, Armstrong will receive a minimum of 32 hours of classroom aviation academics and more than 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or Piper Warrior (PA-28). As part of the certification process, he will be required to complete 17 hours of solo flights.
At the conclusion of the Summer Flight Academy, Armstrong and his classmates will earn their FAA Private Pilot’s licenses as well as five college credits.
“The goal of the scholarship program is to expose exceptional minority students to a career path that currently lacks diversity,” says Lt. Olivia Barrau, E-2C Hawkeye Naval Flight Officer, Commander, Naval Air Forces Operations Officer for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and CNAF Flight Academy Program Manager. “Alfred Armstrong has what it takes to be a leader in the field of aviation and the Navy is honored to play a part in his personal and professional journey.”
Established in 2021, the Summer Flight Academy costs around $28,000 per student but is offered at zero cost to its participants.
