7 interior design trends for 2020

If you love bright, saturated colors and faux marble, and long for the days of wallpaper, welcome to 2020.

Greenville-based interior designer Stephanie Swander, who has a wealth of experience in the design industry and is certified through the Council of Interior Design Qualification, is seeing several trends popping up in homes throughout the Upstate. Some of these aspects of design are mainstays and not leaving anytime soon, while others are throwbacks or are just being used in ways other than initially intended.

The color blue

Not just blue but saturated, bright blue is being used on furniture and accessories in big statement areas such as the kitchen and living room.

Faux marble

With the expense and maintenance of marble, many people are choosing to go with faux marble instead. While the material is gaining popularity in typical places like countertops, it’s also being used in very creative ways in some cases.

“I’ve seen it done on full walls in living rooms, which is really neat,” Swander said.

Saturated jewel tones

Interior design

This is Swander’s favorite trend as more people choose emerald green, sapphire blue and even reds in home design. White kitchens will always be popular, but “people are making some bold choices, especially in kitchen cabinetry,” she said.

Wallpaper

It’s back. Swander is seeing clients, mostly millennials and those in their early to mid-40s, jump from no wallpaper to one wall of paper and even to full rooms of textured wallpaper.

Simplicity in design

Simplicity is showing itself in the lines of furniture, number of accessories, and light fixtures.

“I think with the busyness of people’s lives, they want to come home and not be surrounded by stuff or accessories on every table,” Swander said.

Midcentury modern

The midcentury modern trend isn’t new, but it’s also not going anywhere for 2020. People love everything about this era, from the artwork to the furniture to the patterns, according to Swander.

Light-stained wood

Light colored wood is mostly being used on floors and cabinetry this year, she said.
