‘Tis the Season: A guide to planting holiday blooms
Boots, sweaters, hats, and driving with the top down in my convertible with the heater on full blast are some of my passions in the winter. Although I am glad for the chill in the air now, it seems the holiday season got here faster than I expected.
A visit to a couple’s garden, plus some gardening tips as temperatures dip
A little bit o’ heaven is how I would describe the garden of Bill and Evelyn Watkins. It’s packed with intensive plantings of annuals, such as cosmos, nigella, Brazilian bachelor button, milkweed, Texas sage, zinnia, coleus, and hybrid red salvia (also known as Salvia splendens). The latter reseeds itself.
If you grew up in the South, or even if you only arrived a few months ago, you’ve surely figured out that deviled eggs are a staple dish at events ranging from family cookouts to chic wedding receptions.
The recipe below is for a vanilla heart inside a chocolate loaf, but the combinations are endless — pink strawberry cake hearts inside a vanilla loaf, red velvet hearts inside a vanilla loaf with pink frosting, etc.
