Former Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) spokesperson and vice president of communications Rosylin Rena Weston died on Monday, Aug. 15 from metastatic breast cancer, according to an obituary from Watkins Garrett & Woods Mortuary.
She was 64 years old.
Weston worked with GSP for more than 20 years and owned RAWeston Communications, a firm providing public relations counsel, after receiving her bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of South Carolina.
She was the chief spokesperson at GSP on Sep. 11, 2001, when “the world and the aviation industry changed and I realized that in the weeks, months and years to follow I would play a critical role in helping to bring a sense of calm and re-educate the entire community about how to do something that use to be so simple,” according to her company’s website.
Weston, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, spoke often about her diagnosis and raised awareness in 2020 for the worldwide #LightUpMBC campaign, an event dedicated to raising awareness about metastatic breast cancer.
Metastatic breast cancer can also be classified as stage 4 breast cancer and is diagnosed after cancer spreads to other parts of the body, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“What gets me through this diagnosis are my four F’s: faith, family, friends and fortitude,” she said on social media in 2021.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, William Jeffry Weston, her son, Nelson A. Weston, her daughter Vanessa McKenzie Weston, and her sister, Adreanne (Gary) Simms.
A funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 19 at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Taylors at 4 p.m. with internment on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. in Wayman Chapel AME Church Cemetery in Sumter.
