The second annual SOUTH CAROLINA SEVEN expedition will kick off in the Upstate on July 1 and end in Charleston on July 30.
The month-long expedition will be led by Tom Mullikin, a former Army officer, retired two-star commander of the S.C. State Guard and chairman of the S.C. Floodwater Commission, and will consist of hiking, rafting, kayaking and scuba diving.
The expedition will stop at the seven designated wonders of South Carolina:
- Sassafras Mountain
- Jocassee Gorges
- Chattooga River
- Congaree National Forest
- Edisto River
- Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Basin
- Bull Island-Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge
“This is an expedition that will not only introduce South Carolinians and others to the myriad pristine geographic wonders our state has to offer, but how do we protect these wonders and the magnificently unique albeit fragile environmental systems that surround them,” said Mullikin.
In addition, a documentary about last year’s “SC7” called “Higher Ground” will be shown at three of the exhibition’s destination stops. These stops are:
- July 1, 7:30 p.m., Walhalla Performing Arts Center
- July 14, time to be announced, Newberry Opera House
- July 30, time to be announced, Charleston Visitors Center
Throughout the month of July, Mullikin and other experts will also lead trailside fireside chats and site-explanation discussions ranging from conservation, resiliency, adult and childhood fitness, outdoor therapy, floodwater-mitigation issues and ecological theology.
In addition, Medal of Honor recipients, Gov. Henry McMaster, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, special operations military veterans, state and local officials, business leaders and Girl Scout and Boy Scout members will participate in parts of the expedition.
