An open letter to Greenville City Council:
Greetings. You may consider Cathy and me absolutely in favor of the moratorium. As a predictor of developer behavior when pinched, consider the egregious action on the trees on Church Street as evidence of the need.
Also, I invite you to drive out from City Hall to Augusta and try to find Greenville High. Look at the scrape on the right as you approach Church Street. The very expensive houses next to the Sterling neighborhood (on the old YWCA property) are suddenly devalued if commercial or multifamily covers the freshly-nude ground. Think Buckhead.
Turn around at the mortuary and drive back toward town and try to find Fluor Field behind the concrete edifice. Proceed up Main. When you hit Broad, turn right and then right again on Falls. As you approach Camperdown, try to find the Liberty Bridge, the Reedy River or the falls. All you see is a replica of Disney’s Fort Wilderness towering over the cataract.
Of course some of you do not live nearby or even in Alta Vista, so it is not in your backyard.
I respect what you all do. Please pause before killing the goose.
It is now or never.
