Christmas comes to downtown Greenville this weekend, and it’s bringing heavy traffic. The city has issued some helpful tips to get drivers to their festivities on time.
The city of Greenville will hold its Night of Lights event from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 on Main Street, between Court and Broad streets. The event includes the city’s official tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. and a special glow skate at United Community Bank Ice on Main.
The Bon Secours Wellness Arena is also hosting Trans-Siberian Orchestra on Friday, Dec. 6, with shows at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Because the first show coincides with regular business hours and Greenville’s normal peak traffic times on Friday, city officials said residents living and working in areas around the arena should be aware of potential traffic and parking issues that may arise.
Due to the potential for heavy traffic on Friday, the city is encouraging businesses in the vicinity of the arena with private parking lots to take measures to secure their lots. Additionally, the city is warning motorists traveling into and out of downtown to consider using alternate routes to avoid getting caught in arena traffic before and after each show.
Event parking rate ($6) will be in effect at the following locations, beginning at 5 p.m.:
- Church Street Garage (320 N. Church) beginning at 1 p.m.
- Commons Garage (60 Beattie Place)
- Liberty Square Garage (65 Beattie Place)
- South Spring Street Garage (316 S. Spring)
- Poinsett Garage (25 W. McBee Ave.)
- River Street Garage (414 River St.)
For those willing to park farther away from the arena, free parking is offered at the following locations, starting at 6 p.m.:
- Richardson Street Garage (66 Richardson)
- West Washington Street Deck (101 W. Washington)
Attendees of the 8 p.m. show can also utilize the Heart of Main trolley to get to and from the arena. Trolley stops are conveniently located near City parking facilities and the route also includes the parking lot at County Square, 301 University Ridge. The trolley will drop off passengers at the arena box office from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and pick up passengers after the show from 10 to 11 p.m. Visit www.ridegreenlink.com to view the Heart of Main route map and download the FindGreenlink App for real-time locations of the trolleys. Visit parking.greenvillesc.gov for a complete list of parking facilities, as well as an interactive parking map.
The Greenville Police Department will provide updates on traffic congestion and parking availability in city garages on Facebook and Twitter, as well as the Greenville Police Department mobile app, which is available from Google Play and the App Store.
