Why am I running for Sheriff?
I have traveled a path of service to both the military for 23 years and law enforcement for 12 years. That path of training, education and unique experiences culminated in having what I believe to be the very best and most well-rounded capacity to serve as Sheriff. When the special election was announced I felt a calling to offer my services and experience to the people of Greenville County.
What is the biggest challenge facing Greenville today from a law enforcement perspective?
Keeping pace with the constantly evolving public safety needs of the community. From the available resources, we need to provide what the people of the county need, expect and deserve. We also need to maintain relevance and effectiveness when combating crime, while at the same time developing and adopting best practices within law enforcement. We have maintained a (barely) status quo, day-by-day mindset, rather than engaging in deliberate mid- and long-range planning in collaboration with the community and city council.
What would be my number one goal when first taking office, and how would I go about achieving that goal?
Restore the confidence in the Sheriff’s Office and its mission with sheriff’s office employees as well as the citizens of Greenville County. This starts with clearly focusing the efforts and the expectations of the employees, as well as making sure they understand what to expect of me as their Sheriff. I will provide the best working environment possible for each of our noble public servants in the form of training, compensation and resources to perform their jobs. This will enable the individual, and thereby the agency, to provide a greater level of service to the public.
What distinguishes you as a candidate?
Command and leadership. Actual command of personnel and resources must be accompanied by the actual ownership of responsibility for everything the agency and its people do and fail to do. I have adhered through that principled form of ownership of responsibility and will continue to do so as the sheriff.
What’s something people might not know about you?
I ran the Boston marathon and completed a full Ironman. Most weekends, you can find me running with my wife and our boys on the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
