Why am I running for sheriff?
This is my home and I’ve always wanted to run on a personal level. My father was a city police officer growing up. He used to walk a beat on main street, so as a kid I always felt law enforcement was my calling. I think I bring something that other don’t. I have far more experience than the others, and twice as much as some of them. But I also bring leadership. I want to restore the sheriff’s office to what it once was, when everyone respected it.
What is the biggest challenge facing Greenville today from a law enforcement perspective?
One, bringing the trust back to the office, and we do that through improving leadership, accountability and transparency. And secondly, the county as a whole is not getting the service it needs. I hear constant stories about the wait times for calls for service, and it’s especially exasperated in the extreme northern and extreme southern end of the count. Third, we need to get the office fully staffed.
What would be my number one goal when first taking office, and how would I go about achieving that goal?
I’m going to do a top to bottom review of manpower to make sure every person is in a place that serves citizens best, that they are where they need to be. And then once we fix those numbers, we’ve got to address response times. It’s not unusual for citizens to come to me and say they have to wait 30 to 40 minutes for even a home bugler alarm. I believe that out of improving response times, morale will improve and as a result so will attrition and staffing.
What distinguishes you as a candidate?
I’ve had experience on both sides of the road, so to speak. I’ve been a law enforcement officer on the local level and at the federal level in my role as deputy director of the Secret Service. I’ve always prepared myself to come back home and run for sheriff. I’ve wanted to do it for four decades. I know how to run an organization and make it a professional organization that the citizens it serves can be proud of and can have confidence in.
What’s something people might not know about you?
My love for animals and especially horses. I love to ride horses.
