Pickens County recently received a $10,000 Keep South Carolina Beautiful new affiliate startup grant to create its Keep Pickens County Beautiful program.
The grant will be used to cover the $4,000 Keep America Beautiful affiliate fee, and Pickens County will apply the remaining funds toward the program’s financial base.
“Becoming an affiliate is an extraordinary venture that can take up to a year to complete,” said Mallory Coffey, state leader of Keep South Carolina Beautiful. “Not only does an affiliate community have to have the support of local volunteers, they also have to have the support of the local governments within its jurisdiction.”
Pickens County has previously hosted events related to litter, such as its annual countywide litter pickups. The county also received awards from PalmettoPride for its efforts in preventing and eliminating litter.
Pickens County community members will be required to complete the affiliate process, consisting of two training sessions, which will include a community appearance index, focus area survey and strategic plan to make community goals and behavioral change processes, as well as tackle any specific issues it faces relating to litter, beautification and recycling.
