For nearly 2.3 million households in South Carolina, life without high-speed internet might seem unfathomable. But nearly 200,000 households, many of them in rural areas, still don’t have access to a provider.
On Oct. 18, Lumos, a fiber-optic internet provider based in High Point, North Carolina, announced it would expand into Greenville County. Lumos is investing almost $100 million and will lay 775 miles of fiber beginning in 2024.
“Our goal at Lumos is to bridge the digital divide and provide underserved communities with lightning-fast fiber internet that is necessary for individuals, businesses and communities to thrive,” said Derek Kelly, vice president of market development for Lumos. “It is always exciting to know that when we expand into new markets, we are supporting communities and their systems of education, health care, economic development, and more.”
