Laurens Electric Cooperative announced some of their customers have reported being contacted by scammers who threaten them with electric service disconnection unless immediate payment is issued over the phone through credit, debit, prepaid or gift cards.
The utility company said in a statement they “will never call members to request financial information.”
In addition, Laurens Electric customers with a past due balance will be notified through multiple mail communications and/or emails, and payment options will be recommended before service is disconnected.
If any of the utility company’s customers have questions about their account or receive a suspicious call, they are encouraged to hang up and call Laurens Electric at 1-800-942-3141.
The energy cooperative also recommends that any customers who have been contacted by a scammer report the incident to local authorities.
