Although Columbia’s minor league baseball team, the Fireflies, could face an uncertain future with Major League Baseball’s proposition to cut 40 teams, Greenville Drive appears to be safe.
According to reports, MLB proposed an agreement with the Minor League that would change its structure drastically by cutting 40 of the 160 teams.
Jeff Lantz, Senior Director of Communications at Minor League Baseball says MLB took teams’ facility standards and location into account when proposing cuts.
“I like [Greenville Drive’s] chances,” said Lantz. “Where they’re located is a very good footprint for professional baseball. With the proximity of all the other teams around there, they’re in a very good place.”
The Greenville Journal will update this story as it develops.
