Woodmont Middle School was on a partial lockdown Thursday morning after administrators received reports from students that a sixth grader was carrying a gun on the bus.
According to a statement from Greenville County Schools, the school resource officer and other law enforcement personnel responded immediately and took the 12-year-old in for questioning.
While searching the student’s book bag a weapon was found.
“We are grateful to the brave students who did the right thing and reported what they saw. We tell students often that if you “see something, say something.” It is one of the best ways to keep a school safe,” Beth Brotherton with Greenville County Schools said in a written statement.
According to Lieutenant Ryan Flood with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, the 6th grade student is charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and unlawful carrying of a pistol. Since the minor is under the age of 13, a pick-up order was issued by a family court judge, allowing deputies to place him under arrest.
