Greenlink will hold its 4th Annual Bike vs. Bus vs. Car Race on June 4 at 5:30 p.m. starting at its Transit Center at 100 W. McBee Ave. in Greenville.
Competitors will race from the Transit Center to the First Fridays Gallery Crawl in the Village of West Greenville. The event highlights Greenville’s alternative transportation options and gives an idea of which options make the most sense from a time and convenience standpoint.
The race participants are:
- Marty Epp-Carter, bicyclist
- Marie Scott, Greenlink bus rider
- Danielle Fontaine, motorist
- Meghan Verret, rideshare user
Scott’s departure aboard Greenlink’s Route 506: Woodside bus will serve as the “starting flag.” The bus will make all scheduled stops between the Transit Center and the Village of West Greenville.
Epp-Carter, the bicyclist, may use any bike route to get to the finish line but must be dressed for an art gallery event and obey all traffic laws whereas Fontaine, the motorist, will walk to her car in the Poinsett Garage once Scott’s bus departs. Once at her car, she may choose her route to the Village of West Greenville, but she must obey all traffic laws.
Rounding out the four racers, Verret will book a trip using a rideshare app such as Uber or Lyft. Her driver must follow the route provided by the app.
All contestants are expected to arrive at the finish line at The Bank Building Studios at 1279 Pendleton St. in Greenville around 5:45 p.m.
The following rules will apply to the finish:
- Epp-Carter must secure her bike to a bike rack near The Bank Building Studios and walk to the front door.
- Scott must get off the bus at the bus stop at Pendleton and Irving streets and walk to The Bank Building Studios.
- Fontaine must park in a public parking space and walk to The Bank Building Studios.
- Verret can be dropped off at The Bank Building Studios and walk to the front door.
Once the race ends, a panel of judges from the Metropolitan Arts Council will score each contestant on how quickly they completed the commute, how much they spent on the trip, what else they did during the commute and how many people were able to use their transportation mode.
When the scores are tallied, a winner will be chosen and receive a medal.
