Every day is a garden party day
Martin Garden Center is a happy place for many Upstate residents. After suffering through a shockingly malicious vandalism in March of 2019, they have bounced back with determination. “As I understand,” says majority shareholder Reggie Meehan, “it was the largest herbicide attack in U.S. history.” More than $190,000 in plants were quarantined and then either thrown away or rehabbed for later sale.
Looking at the “five acres of gorgeous” comprising Martin Garden Center now, one could hardly believe such an event had taken place. The tables in the greenhouse and courtyards are laden with blooming plants everywhere. “You just have to keep going – and growing. We’re as green as we’ve ever been,” says shareholder Linda Schweickert. The shareholders boast about their new hybrid pansy named Meehan’s Melancholy, a white pansy with just a little blue around the edges. They also are celebrating having been named one of the top ten garden centers in the U.S. by Southern Living magazine’s Grumpy Gardener.
One of their new joys, GardenDelivery.com, has just been opened to allow for the “non-interaction transaction.” With health fears and social interaction concerns, Martin Garden Center delivered a true gem, allowing customers to order plants online, pay online, and have plants, soil and other garden necessities locally delivered or available for curbside pickup. Families with cabin fever plus spring fever now have an outlet — gardening — and GardenDelivery.com will make their dream gardens a reality.
