Local family owned and operated since 1951
Home in time for dinner; with family on Sunday. These are the principles on which Jeff Lynch founded his appliance business in 1951, and they are at the core of how his son Mark still runs it today.
Jeff Lynch occupied several prominent locations in Greenville before landing in Lake Forest Shopping Center, where they operated for the better part of four decades. It was in this location that Mark first came to work for the family business, eventually earning the job of watching the store on Wednesdays while his father played his weekly round of golf at Bonnie Brae.
Mark learned the business from the ground up, riding along with the senior delivery installer while in high school, and working as much as he could during breaks from the University of South Carolina. While in college he started learning the sales and accounting end of things so he left college in 1981 and joined Jeff Lynch full time.
“My father was a great mentor and he showed me everything he did and I was always interested in it,” Mark says. “We had some tough times because we were both passionate, but we would always work it out.”
Mark remembers the turning point in their relationship, when they weren’t seeing eye to eye and his father hauled him out to the parking lot and pointed up at the sign, reminding his son of who was in charge.
“He said, ‘I want all your ideas but I have final veto. Once I’ve heard it, if I don’t agree with it, it’s time to get back to work,’” Mark remembers. “He was always fair and would always hear me out.”
The business continued to grow and relocate as needed, finally taking over the former Lowe’s location at the corner of Woodruff and Roper Mountain Road — a move not without controversy, being that Jeff Lynch gives the big box stores a serious run for their money here in Greenville.
“We’re fierce competitors of theirs, and that’s because we have the best staff in Greenville,” Mark says. “They’re good, and they know what they’re doing.”
