Breaking the cycle, transforming lives
For nearly three decades, Generations Group has been working to put an end to the cycle of abuse in South Carolina. As the only organization specifically designed to rehabilitate boys who are victims of physical and sexual abuse, Generations has achieved a 98% success rate – graduating young men from their program who have broken the cycle of abuse, never to demonstrate abuse themselves.
“Our recidivism rate is about 3%,” says Brian Clark, executive director at Generations. “Statistically, if a boy comes to Generations, he is going to put an end to his cycle of sexual abuse.”
Clark joined the organization 25 years ago and fell in love with the mission. Caring for about 60 boys at a time, Generations has graduated more than 900 boys from its program. The residential facility provides 24-hour care for young men, who participate in twenty-four therapy sessions a week. In addition, Generations builds these boys into productive members of the community without putting them behind bars. “We take them to ballgames, volunteer for senior organizations, clean the Reedy River and teach them the importance of giving back,” says Scott Stephens, director of development.
The staff and volunteers at Generations make it all possible. “I believe that the caring, trusting relationships that our staff are able to build with the kids while confronting issues that many people are not comfortable dealing with is what makes us successful,” says Clark, noting that the meaningful time spent with volunteers only enhances that.
