Throughout pop culture, society has been inundated with images of design trends, such as the farmhouse style popularized by Joanna Gaines, which features a mix of old and new wood. When houses are redecorated to match current trends, one room often created is the man cave.
Merriam-Webster defines a man cave as a room or space designed according to the taste of the man of the house to be used as his personal area for hobbies and leisure activities.
“I will say that throughout history there have been rooms built for men,” said Bill Finnell, owner of the Simpsonville-based Finnell Builders. “For example, smoking rooms, cigar rooms, trophy rooms, et cetera. These types of rooms are in the Biltmore House, which was built at the turn of the century.”
Many sources, including AtlasObscura.com, point to the first recorded use of the term in John Gray’s 1992 book “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.” In the book, Gray points to the use of a private man cave for men to utilize to think over issues or have space to forget their problems by reading or playing a game.
Since Gray’s book, the man cave has evolved from space in the garage to work on cars, motorcycles or boats, to a workshop space allowing the man to craft and create various projects, to a basement or individually built room showcasing each man’s interests.
“A lot of what we have done has been gun rooms,” said Finnell. “They have been really popular. You kind of build the house and then you build a man cave or gun cave onto it.”
In addition to gun rooms, man caves may feature sports memorabilia, arcade game machines, video game consoles, large televisions, mini or large refrigerators, billiard tables, foosball tables and ping-pong tables.
“We’ve also done theater rooms,” Finnell said. “The bar is popular in every kind of man cave we have worked on. We’ve seen it set up with a pool table and other game tables. We have done a few wine rooms, too.”
Whether the homeowner wishes to simply redecorate a spare room to create a man cave or transform a room, Finnell advises the person create a plan for what he or she wants to do and provide pictures to any professional they hire. Once they have a plan in place, they can figure out a budget and based on the scope of the project, find out the timeframe.
With a plan, budget and time frame in place, the homeowner is free to get started on a man cave or any other project he or she wants done by a professional.
