Bon Secours Diane Collins Neuroscience Institute in Greenville received a $30,000 grant to research the longterm effects of COVID-19.
The institute, at 2 Innovation Drive, Suite 350, Greenville, received the internal grant from Healthy State Alliance, a partnership between Bon Secours Mercy Health and Ohio State University. Dr. Kathleen Woschkolup, director of neurology at Bon Secours St. Francis in Greenville, will work with researchers from Ohio State on the project.
Since the pandemic began, health professionals have noticed a number of complications from patients who’ve otherwise recovered from COVID-19. Dana Hodges, a speech language pathologist for Bon Secours St. Francis, said patients have struggled with their thinking processes, including memory, focus and multitasking.
“Hopefully it will give us more information on how to better treat these patients and give them better outcomes,” Hodges said.
Researchers are hoping to develop a diagnosis and treatment plans for those struggling with long-term COVID symptoms.
“They’ve gone back to work after recovering from COVID and realizing they’re not as quick on their feet and are having trouble communicating — issues that weren’t present before,” she said.
