Greenville’s Sterling Middle School is the best middle school in South Carolina, according to state-level rankings released in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 Best K-8 Schools list released earlier this month.
“This national recognition is a direct reflection of our hardworking students, the unwavering dedication of our faculty and staff, and the unconditional support of our families and community partners,” said Josh Patterson, principal of Sterling Middle School.
Patterson said the school’s success is, in part, to the student-centric approach the school takes. He said both during and after school, there are certified teachers on hand to assist students with any classwork they’re struggling with.
“We’re taking a very student-centric approach,” Patterson said. “The students take more ownership of their learning.”
Diane Jackson, principal of Tigerville Elementary, said she was caught off-guard by the news.
“It brings a smile to my face — the work pays off,” Jackson said.
She said the school had an all-in philosophy, and like Sterling, they always had opportunities to help struggling students.
“I probably have the best job in the county,” she said.
The parameters included math and reading performance and how well students fared on standardized tests. It was compiled using 2018-19 rankings, which did not include the affect COVID-19 had on education.
Of South Carolina’s 716 elementary schools, 13 Greenville County schools landed in the top 50, with three in the top 10: Tigerville Elementary, Pelham Road Elementary and Augusta Circle Elementary.
