Greenville County Schools has announced its Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022 at a celebration on Thursday, Aug. 12. The award went to Anne Tromsness who teaches theater at the Fine Arts Center.
“[My passion for arts is] a lifelong love and I want to share that love with my students. Engaging with imagination is a limitless resource, and everybody comes in with something different, so the fact that we get to share that and manifest together is a pretty awesome honor to do every day,” Tromsness said.

The first runner-up for the award went to Christian Scott. Scott is the band director at Hillcrest Middle School. Sarah Poole, a fifth grade teacher at Taylors Elementary School, was the second runner-up. The district selected Anna Hasekamp, who teaches seventh grade English language arts and social studies at Greenville Middle Academy, as third runner-up.
Competition for the school district’s Teacher of the Year award began last year when the schools and centers chose their Teachers of the Year. Those teachers then submitted an application to a selection committee that chose the 10 finalists.
The finalists then went through an interview and were observed in the classroom. They were rated by the judging committee by knowledge of content, interactions with students, their communication skills and their teaching.
The members of the selection committee were Dr. Michelle Meekins, retired GCS administrator; Kelly Nalley, former GCS Teacher of the Year and former SC Teacher of the Year; Scott Powell, Rotary Club of Greenville; Andy Waters, Herff Jones of South Carolina; and Dr. Phillip Wilder, Clemson University.
