A new Vietnamese restaurant, Can Tho Bistro & Bar, is getting closer to opening in the suite adjoining Carolina Ale House in downtown Greenville.
Haven’t heard of it? The restaurant quietly slid into the downtown corridor at 113 S. Main St. The sign went up a few months ago but the first we heard from the restaurant came from social media June 18.
“Hey Greenville! We’ve seen you peeking,” the post began. “The wait is almost over, and we’re excited to finally share more of our story with you. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes looks, sneak peeks of the space, and updates on our upcoming soft opening.”
We’re big fans of pho here at the Weekly Dish. Hopefully, the menu will show a little bit of the noodle soup.

It was Juneteenth at the time of this writing, so we wanted to list a few of our favorite local Black-owned restaurants or food concepts. This list is not exhaustive by any means: Crave in downtown Greenville, O.J.’s Diner on Vardry Street, White Wine & Butter in Greer, Cheryl’s Kitchen Potato Boat and The Herbal Farmercy.
Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “19th” and commemorates the the date considered the official end of slavery in the U.S. in 1865. A Greenville beverage business, Six Nineteen of 1865, was named to honor the holiday.

Bite sized bits:
- This is honestly a pretty big deal but since we’ve covered it extensively, we’ll just keep it short: A chef with Greenville ties, Taylor Montgomery, was lauded with the James Beard Award for Best Chef Southeast. Montgomery beat out J. Trent Harris of Mujō in Atlanta, Mary Ellen Diaz of Almabea in West Virginia, David Willocks of The Baker’s Table in Kentucky, and Greenville’s own Joe Cash of Michelin-starred Scoundrel. Yes, chef!
- Just over a year after it went before City Council, Stone Cottage, the soon-to-come sister restaurant of Passerelle Bistro in downtown Greenville, announced it is now hiring. Hopefully that means it’s a little closer to opening.
- Beginning June 19, Sum Bar has begun to serve lunch Wednesday through Friday featuring items such as chicken sandwich, dim sum, shrimp, and congee and sichuan steak frites.
