Fourth-year medical students at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville recently experienced a critical moment in their education journey: Match Day.
The annual tradition serves as a right of passage for every medical student across the county. At noon on March 21, the students opened sealed envelopes to discover where they matched for their post-graduate residency program. In addition, they learned which medical specialty they will be training in over the next several years.
“Match Day symbolizes the culmination of all the hard work these students put in from the time they stepped foot on campus,” said Phyllis MacGilvray, dean of the USC School of Medicine Greenville.
USC School of Medicine Greenville achieved a 99% match rate in 2025, with 97 students matching to residency programs in 26 states. MacGilvray explained that many of the medical students matched in South Carolina and will be training in specialties that the communities desperately need.
This year, 14 students including Madison Stanley specifically matched to residency programs in Upstate South Carolina. Stanley will train to become an OB-GYN in the local residency program at Prisma Health and USC School of Medicine Greenville.
“I feel very connected to the community here,” Stanley said. “I wanted to stay to really serve a population that feels very at home to me and women’s health care always needs more people.”
The other health systems in Upstate South Carolina where students are matched include Spartanburg Medical Center and AnMed Health. MacGilvray noted that a significant number of those who matched outside of South Carolina will return to practice medicine after completing their training.

USC School of Medicine Greenville’s fourth year medical students were matched in 20 specialties, from emergency medicine to general surgery. MacGilvary said it was also a record year with more students matching to family medicine residency programs this year than in the school’s history.
“Today marks the start of that specialty identity for our students. Match Day is the moment when they transition from being medical students to becoming pediatricians, surgeons, obstetricians, family physicians, psychiatrists, and much more,” MacGilvary said.
