World Affairs Council Upstate, a Greenville nonprofit group affiliated with Upstate International dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of global affairs, is hosting a series of free webinars that kicked off on July 9 with retired U.S. Ambassador John Herbst.
On July 15, the series returns with Gen. John Allen, a retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general who will talk about the importance of leadership in turbulent times.
Allen is currently serving as the president of the Brookings Institution, a public policy think tank based in Washington, D.C. Prior to his retirement from the military, Allen commanded 150,000 U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan from July 2011 to February 2013. He later served as senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense on Middle East security, during which time he led the security dialogue for the Israeli/Palestinian peace process.
The event is from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Visit upstateinternational.org/world-affairs-council for more information or to register.
The July 22 webinar is titled “Beyond Health: How COVID-19 Will Reshape International Development” and will feature David Weiss and Carrie Hessler-Radelet, both executives at Global Communities, a global development and humanitarian assistance group. The two will talk about the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on countries that had been close to eliminating poverty before the pandemic, according to Upstate International’s website.
Weiss, CEO of Global Communities, spent 18 years working for the federal government in various positions, including as special assistant to the director of the Peace Corps before serving as senior policy advisor for the global law firm DLA Piper.
Hessler-Radelet, president of Global Communities, previously served as the director of the Peace Corps from 2012-2017 and deputy director from 2012-2015. At the Peace Corps, Hessler-Radelet led historic reforms to modernize and strengthen the international volunteer service organization to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, according to the Upstate International website.
