Silent Tears, an advocacy group for abused women and children, announced on July 23 the Match 2020 fundraising challenge to benefit domestic violence centers in the Upstate, Midlands and Pee Dee regions of South Carolina.
For every dollar donated to one of five chosen centers, Silent Tears will donate $2, up to $525,000.
Due to COVID-19, these facilities have not been able to fundraise because of social distancing restrictions making it difficult to for people to gather. In addition, the centers are seeing a surge in costs through having to pay for hotel rooms, takeout meals and transportation as they keep families apart from each other to ensure social distancing, said Silent Tears executive director Kelly Nichols.
“Part of the Silent Tears mission is to offer equality to every victim, regardless of where you live, what you do or your skin color,” Nichols said. “The five centers we wanted to focus on were the most economically challenged counties, and they are the most rural. Most of these counties, it is an hour to get to a center. During this COVID time, we are trying to boost them to give them extra help. We are trying to address the dilemmas people face during COVID.”
The centers benefiting from the Match 2020 fundraising challenge are:
- The Safe Home, which serves Abbeville, Laurens and Saluda counties
- The Pee Dee Coalition, which serves Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties
- The Cumbee Center, which serves Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties
- YWCA of Upper Midlands, which serves Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties
- CASA Family Systems, which serves Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties
These five centers serve 19 of South Carolina’s 46 counties.
“We must do everything within our power to show people living in abusive relationships that the infrastructure is in place to help them transition to a life free from interpersonal violence,” said S.C. Rep. Bruce Bannister. “We hope Silent Tears’ generous matching gift inspires residents across the state to make a contribution to support our domestic violence centers, because for many, these centers are their only way out.”
This Match 2020 fundraising challenge will run until Dec. 31, 2020. To donate, visit SilentTearsSC.org/Match2020.
