The Greer Commission of Public Works and Greer Police Department will host a drive-thru drug takeback event on Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CPW headquarters at 301 McCall St. in Greer.
Greer citizens are asked to bring their unused and expired pills or patches for safe disposal, but event organizers will be unable to accept liquids, needles or sharp objects.
“We accept any kind of over-the-counter or prescription pills, including pet medicine, for our annual drug takeback day,” said Greer Police Department Sgt. Jeff Smith. “This event has proved to be successful the past four years collecting 190 pounds in 2016, 158 pounds in 2017, 112 pounds in 2018 and 286 pounds in 2019.”
Community members are expected to remain in their vehicles while dropping off the medication. Event organizers have also requested participants to combine pills into one Ziploc bag rather than bringing multiple bottles with personal information on it. Once all the pills are collected, they will be taken to Columbia, South Carolina, to be burned at high temperatures.
For those who are unable to attend the event, a drop box will be available at the Greer Police Department at 102 S. Main St. in Greer or at Greer Memorial Hospital at 830 S. Buncombe Road in Greer.
