Greenville was named as a part of the top 10 of SmartAsset’s inaugural list of 25 best places for retirees to live and work.
Greenville “stands out for its high concentration of medical centers and retirement communities, its low estimated tax burden for seniors and its affordable housing costs compared to the city’s average retirement income,” said SmartAsset spokesperson Kara Gibson.
For this study, SmartAsset compared 525 cities nationwide with populations of at least 65,000. They evaluated metrics including unemployment rate for seniors, housing costs as a percentage of average retirement income, estimated senior tax burden, retirement communities and medical centers per 10,000 residents, violent crime rate and property crime rate.
“Our analysis on the best places for retirees to live and work is a study, not a survey,” Gibson said. “We analyzed data from sources including the Census Bureau’s 5-year American Community Survey, the Census Bureau’s Zip Codes Business Patterns Survey and the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program.”
