First Presbyterian Church of Greenville was recently awarded the South Carolina School Boards Association’s Champions for Public Education Award for its work with Hollis Academy.
This award is given to businesses, community residents or organizations whose support and contributions have benefited public schools. The church works to support Hollis Academy’s faculty, staff, students and families through many programs, such as providing a room parent for every classroom, offering mentorship for at-risk children, establishing a feeding program to provide meals and snacks each weekend and providing assistance for families when needs or emergencies arise.
“This ministry began 11 years ago when First Pres really sensed the calling to move beyond our physical church walls and out into our community,” said Hollis ministry lay leader Beth Simmons. “Just two miles from our church campus, Hollis was a place where we could easily enter into a relationship with a school, its students and their families. We view these children as an extension of our church family and a critical part of the future of our community.”
The church also organizes a Christmas store program for the holidays, where families can shop from items donated by church members while paying a small cost.
