On Jan. 7, climbers from across the Southeast will gather at Climb Upstate in Spartanburg, the region’s largest indoor rock climbing gym, for the second annual Rockin’ The New Year Climbing Competition. Last year, the event attracted participants from Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Columbia and Asheville, among other cities.
The competition begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public to compete and view. Both adults and children are eligible to enter. Early registration discount pricing, which lasts until Jan. 1, is $30 for ages 17 and under and $35 for adults ages 18+. According to a press release, “Adults will compete in gender-based recreational, intermediate and advanced categories. Youth will be placed in categories based on gender and age.”
The competition begins at 10 a.m. on Jan. 7, and awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Various sponsors, including Black Diamond, The Local Hiker, Sunrift, Atomik and Evolv, among others, will supply prizes, said Ashley Crane, marketing director.
“We’ve been thrilled by the support we’ve received from the outdoor community,” said Crane regarding the event’s sponsors.
Also, the gym is putting up “new, fresh bouldering routes for the competitors,” said Madison Gregory, climbing coach and route setter, in a press release. At 2 p.m., after the awards ceremony, the public is invited to try the new bouldering routes.
“We’re pretty stoked about how this is becoming a tradition in the Upstate,” Gregory added.
Climb Upstate is located at 6655 Pottery Road in Spartanburg. Among other offerings, the gym has open hours for the public, memberships, group pricing, parties and classes.
