Upstate animal lovers of all ages have a new location to add to their list of places to visit.
Ballyhoo Petting Zoo, located at 849 Norris Road in Anderson, opened in March. While the business is newly opened, owner Miranda Hayes came up with the idea in 2017.
“A few years ago, we decided to have a petting zoo birthday party for my niece,” she said. “We found that there weren’t a lot of inexpensive options in the area. After the birthday party, we decided to open a petting zoo.”
The business features a variety of animals including mini goats, sheep and cows, alpacas, miniature and regular-sized potbellied pigs, donkeys, miniature horses, chickens, ducks and bunnies.
In addition to seeing the animals, Ballyhoo allows visitors to interact with the animals.
“We do interactions every 30 minutes while we are open,” said Hayes. “We let people hold the baby animals. We [also] have a treat feeder and treat cups you can purchase to feed the animals.”
Since opening, Ballyhoo has held an Easter event, which included an egg scavenger hunt, photos with the Mini Rex bunnies and games. The petting zoo has also scheduled a few birthday parties and is making plans for summer activities such as a little zookeeper’s program to allow kids to learn how to care for the animals.
The zoo is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free for children 2 and under, $6 for ages 3 to 15, $8 for adults, and $7 for senior citizens as well as those with military or student IDs.
