Tavoris Miller is the owner and founder of F.I.Y.A. (Focused, Inspired, Young, Achievers) Dance University, which is the only African-American owned dance studio in Greenwood, S.C..
Tavoris started his journey working at Westview Middle School where he became the first African-American male step and dance coach for their school. Over the years at the school, his vision was to see young people express themselves through the arts. He put together an all-male dance squad, an 8th grade prom, a gospel choir, and more! He began to imagine these programs as mentoring opportunities.
In 2012, he opened his own dance facility where he could not only offer dance lessons but provide a safe haven and outlet for inner city youth. They could do homework and hang out in a safe environment. F.I.Y.A. Dance University currently has 90 students enrolled.
Tavoris, along with his supportive staff, have taken their students across the U.S. to pursue their dreams of dance. He is the only studio in the history of Greenwood to make two national television appearances, and he isn’t stopping there! He also produces local events including a Purity Ball, fashion shows, talent shows, and is currently working on a Family Prom.
Tavoris gives back to his community by offering free dance scholarships for children who may not be able to afford tuition. He also teaches his students to give back by taking them to perform at nursing homes, churches, and other local events.
Tavoris has a passion to see young people succeed in school and life, and always reminds his students to keep God first in everything they do!
From the nominator:
Mr. Miller’s dance studio has been a positive role model in the community for the youth. His tuition is not based on what other studios charge. His tuition is based on not leaving any child out who wants to dance. His main focus is keeping the youth off the streets and exposing them to other possibilities. We live in Greenwood SC and Mr. Miller has traveled with these children to Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Orlando, Atlanta, and all the counties surrounding Greenwood. He has been on the television show Bring It twice. When it comes to the children, Mr. Miller has many roles. He is a coach, a mentor, a father figure, and anything else a child may need. He sacrifices so much for the children and the only thing he asks in return is for the children to show good manners, be obedient, be respectful, and do their best in school. There is so much more and words can’t explain it all. Everything about Mr. Miller is positive and he is a Black History Maker.
Please join us in congratulating this 2019 Upstate Black History Maker!
