As principal of Grove Elementary School in Greenville County, Joseph Stowe makes the safety, academics, growth, and achievement of goals for our developing young people the top of his priority list.

Mr. Stowe, a Philadelphia native, began his teaching career in North Carolina after graduating from North Carolina A&T State University.  He was later recruited by one of his former college professors and began the next phase of his teaching career in Greenville County.  After seven years of successfully inspiring children and teaching the leaders of tomorrow, and earning his Masters degree at Furman University, he moved into the role of a school administrator. This year he celebrates his 20th year in education, 19th year with Greenville County Schools, and 13th year as an administrator! During his tenure, he has received the Greenville County’s 2006 TIAA-CREF Leaders in Learning and Liberty Administrator of the Year Award, and WYFF News Channel 4’s May 2008 Golden Apple Award.

Mr. Stowe also holds other leadership roles in our community:

  • President of the Greenville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, where he earned the 2011 National Guide Right Director of the Year;
  • Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Advisory Council Member;
  • Founder of several elementary school mentoring programs: Visionary Panther Leaders, Visionary Topcat Leaders, Visionary Eagle Leaders, and the Diamond Kutters’ Step Team;
  • Promoter of the schoolwide “Dress for Success” program;
  • Volunteer for Kappa Knights middle school program, Kappa League high school program, and advisor of collegiate Kappas;
  • Owner/Operator of Intense Kreations (Art Business) and D.B.A. DJ Klassy J.

From the nominator:

It is indeed a privilege to recommend, Joseph J. Stowe, for this honor. Since his arrival to Greenville County and the Upstate in the Fall of 1999, Mr. Stowe has worked untiringly and effectively as a community member, role model and leader of many. He “thinks outside of the box” while ensuring that any environment he is a part of is focused on achievement.

Always with a willing spirit, handshake or embrace, Mr. Stowe interacts positively with the youth, parents, teachers and colleagues. He is well-known and well-liked in our community. Often, he is providing mentoring and encouragement that goes beyond his regular work duties. He has developed a mentoring program for boys (i.e. Visionary Eagle Leaders) guiding developing boys in grades 2-5 in the areas of discipline, integrity, respect, leadership and achievement. He also purchases ties for these developing gentlemen and alongside other male educators, teaches them how to tie ties. He also founded the all-male Diamond Kutters step team, and works tirelessly with middle school students, high school students, and college men. Mr. Stowe always looks for a “win-win” situation and a silver lining in the cloud as he encourages reflection and goal setting. I applaud the efforts of Joseph J. Stowe, principal of Grove Elementary School, president of the Greenville (SC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and all-around positive contributor to the lives of so many.

Please join us in congratulating this 2019 Upstate Black History Maker!
