Growing up in Cleveland, OH, with a mother in cosmetology and a father who was a tailor and dry cleaner, Mr. Carver says, “I had no choice but to pay attention to fashion. The motto around our house was: ‘If you look good, you feel good; if you feel good, you will do good.'”

Mr. Carter has put that family motto into action, by donating profits from his popular bow ties to charity.

When Mr. Carter opened his men’s retail store, Empire Ltd. Haberdashery, in downtown Greer, he felt he was finally in a place – geographically and existentially – where his sense of style and business expertise could be maximized to its fullest potential. He explains that his store “was created specifically for men with exquisite taste. But we’ve found that men from all forms of work and play enjoy our products and we’re very happy to serve them!”

But it wasn’t enough. He was looking for a way to help give back to his community.

“Along with my love for fashion, I also have a passion for non-profit organizations, which includes Meals On Wheels, Goodwill Industries and Pendleton Place Children Shelter, to name a few. I was determined to find a way to support and assist non-profit organizations in raising more funding and at the same time share my love for fashion.”

Voilà! Empire Bow Ties was created to help support several non-profit organizations raise money for their cause while at the same time provide custom, hand-made bow ties for the discerning man who loves to wear them. Online shoppers can input a code at checkout to specify their chosen non-profit organization from a list, and half of all profits from that sale are donated.

Please join us in congratulating this 2019 Upstate Black History Maker, James Carter!
