For the next two weekends, South Carolina musicians will be banding together virtually to help Greenville’s Radio Room venue keep its doors open.
Darby Wilcox, Mac Leaphart, SUSTO, Kenny George, Mary Norris, Mark Webb and Mourning Dove will perform livestream shows on their respective Facebook and Instagram feeds this Friday and Saturday and next weekend, and rather than tipping the performers, the audience will be encouraged to send donations to the Radio Room’s gofundme page, gofundme.com/f/radio-room.
Like many music venues around the country, the Radio Room has had to severely limit its concert schedule since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the livestream benefit show was organized by Leaphart and Wilcox to help keep the club afloat while live-show revenue is at a standstill. The bar and restaurant area of the Radio Room are still open, but their next scheduled show isn’t until Sept. 18.
Wes Gilliam, co-owner of and booker for the Radio Room, says he didn’t expect the grassroots benefit effort.
“Honestly, I was just very surprised,” he says. “I’m always just humbled when anyone wants to help us out.”
Gilliam says the idea grew out of his and Leaphart’s inability to schedule a live show at the Radio Room as the pandemic got worse.
“He and I had been trying to plan a show for several months with different dates, different lineups, all kinds of crazy variables,” Gilliam says, “and obviously it just never came together because of the pandemic. He could’ve gotten frustrated, but instead he reached out and organized this for us. So it was really cool to just sit back and let things unfold after months of making plans, re-making plans and re-re-making plans.”
The schedule is as follows:
