“Silent Surfaces: Mapping Spatial and Personal Discoveries” will open June 7 at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts at 101 Abney St.
The exhibition will run through July 24 and features around 30 works by painter Donnie Copeland of Arkansas, stop-motion video creator Ryan Lewis of Michigan and mixed-media artist Matthew McLaughlin of Maryland.
Copeland’s painted collages are from his series “Interrupted Paths.”

Lewis’ stop-motion films will be played in six- to eight-minute loops on four television screens. The selections are from his “Everted Sanctuaries” series, which uses found objects to explore the nature of introversion and illustrate the transformation from silence to expression.

McLaughlin uses his mixed-media art in his “Proxemic Boundaries” and “Reflective Cartography” series to study personal and societal spatial environments.
“GCCA is thrilled to feature these three accomplished visual artists in GCCA’s Main Gallery this summer,” said Ben Tarcson, gallery director with GCCA. “We should always allow ourselves time to reflect on the disruptions, introspections and boundaries that shape our lives. ‘Silent Surfaces’ offers an opportunity for us to consider more deeply the spaces we create and the inner worlds we often overlook.”
GCCA will also host an opening reception to celebrate the exhibit from 6-9 p.m. June 7.
