Artist: Ryan Calloway
GJ: How were you contacted to create this piece?
RC: I chose to create this artwork because I wanted a large sculpture in The Village of West Greenville to identify full-time working art studio locations.
GJ: What is the inspiration for this piece?
I had the color in mind when I created this and wanted something cheery and bright to stand as a landmark for the many full-time artists at Railside Studios on the Woodside Avenue side of the Lois Street Bridge. I hope this triggers more artwork to be put on or around this historic bridge in the Arts District of Greenville.
GJ: What materials did you use?
RC: I used steel hemispheres, steel wrap, recycled oil drum and salvaged lamp post.
GJ: How long did it take to create? What was the creation process like?
RC: This piece took several weeks to complete. I had a clear idea of what I wanted to do and the materials on hand, so it was straightforward.
GJ: What is your favorite part of the piece and why?
RC: The large steel hemispheres on the top make this artwork seem celestial.
GJ: When was it completed?
RC: March 2020
