Affordable housing and neighborhood preservation have become issues entwined with city officials’ and the local community’s willingness to support Greenville County’s plan to redevelop County Square.

In recent days, the city and county have made progress toward a resolution, according to Greenville County Council Chairman Butch Kirven.

Kirven sent a letter to Mayor Knox White on Oct. 9 that elaborated on the county’s proposals to arrive at an amicable solution.

In the letter, Kirven wrote that the county and its development partners were committed to “preserving the unique character and charm of the Haynie-Sirrine neighborhood, and supporting the City of Greenville’s desire to encourage the construction of additional affordable housing units throughout the community.”

Kirven notes that the county has committed $1 million annually for five years toward affordable housing projects in the county. He writes that the University Ridge Development will provide an additional $2 million over the next five years for affordable housing “on or off-site within the Haynie-Sirrine neighborhood and areas in the vicinity of the Greenville County Square District.”

Neighborhood associations including Haynie Sirrine, West-End, Greater-Sullivan, Cleveland Forrest, Sterling and North Main are meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the redevelopment project. The meeting at Swansons Warehouse at 12 North Irvine Street will provide training to participants on making their voice heard about the matter.

The County Square project goes before the city’s planning commission for a vote on Oct. 17 at City Hall.

The University Ridge Development would include the new county office building, parks (including the Veterans Park), open space, new roads and infrastructure improvements. The project would be a mixed-use development with residential, retail, office space and more.

The county projects annual revenue from the build-out could mean more than $40 million per year for the city, public schools, the state and the county.
