Greenville’s Parallel Parkway opened September 10 at 9 a.m. The Parkway connects Verdae Boulevard and Woodruff Industrial Lane in an effort to alleviate traffic on Woodruff Road. The project is part of the Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS) plan for the Woodruff Road Congestion Relief Project.

The roadway is expected to remove approximately 7,500 vehicles daily from Woodruff Road, which averages 40,000 vehicles per day.

The Parkway has two lanes and runs about half a mile; it includes one multi-lane and two single-lane roundabouts designed to prevent congestive traffic. Additionally, there is a 10-foot-wide path and 17 streetlights to increase driver, pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

Benefits of the Parkway include more than an alternative to Woodruff Road. There are multiple connections to Woodruff Road on the Parkway, allowing drivers to access destinations at several different points along the road.

This project also features environmental components. Using natural systems restoration, about 1,200 feet of stream bank from Parallel Parkway to Old Sulphur Springs Road will be enhanced and preserved. There is a 250-foot conservation buffer that runs approximately 1,800 feet along the waterway. These restoration and preservation techniques will improve water quality downstream of the Parkway construction.

Breakdown of the Parallel Parkway project:

  • The Parkway will ease traffic from an average of 7,500 cars along Woodruff Road;
  • The project cost $3.4 million and was sponsored by:
  • Piedmont Natural Gas; City of Greenville; Greenville County; Greenville Legislative Delegation; Transportation Committee; Hollingsworth Funds, Verdae Properties and Magnolia Park Greenville;
  • The Parkway is .42 miles long;
  • It features two single-lane and one multi-lane roundabouts as well as 10-foot wide paths and street lights.
